Food De-tox.

It's been awhile since I've posted anything about whole foods or organics or doing nice things for my body, so I figured today was a great day: I'm de-toxing.

It's not about de-toxing from drugs.  It's about de-toxing from crappy food.

I'm in the middle of what is affectionately known as "hell week" for the musical I'm directing, and I've been eating out.  A lot.

Taco Bell (twice), Panera Bread (three times), and general junk at home (baked Lays - you really shouldn't eat too many of those...).

Anyway, today I woke up sick.  My intenstines were spasming (I have an allergy to MSG that when combined with stress = pain).  I feel groggy.  I have a headache.  I'm slightly nauseous.  My eyeballs hurt.

So I figured today I'd better get my system back in gear with some whole, organic, and absolutely NOT processed foods.

Breakfast:

1.5 cups Tension Tamer Tea
1 medium banana

Lunch:

Amy's Organics Southwestern Vegetable Medley
Two slices whole wheat bread (Nature's Own, one of the only breads out there that doesn't include high fructose corn syrup) with scant organic butter

Not sure yet what dinner will be, but it's going to be something good.

The thing about eating good food and knowing how I'm SUPPOSED to feel and the energy level I'm SUPPOSED to have leaves me with very little tolerance for anything less.  Gross food in moderation is sometimes necessary when you're insanely busy, but this weekend was overkill, even when I made the "right choices" at both restaurants - most places add MSG or "yeast extract" (which is MSG in disguise), and it's tough to get away from high fructose corn syrup in the quick food world.  Both are bad for everyone, make bodies feel toxic, and simply shouldn't be in our food supply - but that's a rant for another time.

Hey girl,

I find it all pretty interesting too. I've migrated to eating probably at 85% basically straight from the farm. The cost has driven me towards a more plant based diet, but we are LOVING the meat we do get. It's a amazing what has improved, my skin, my energy, even my dental health! I wasn't ever sensitive until AFTER I changed my eating habits.

GOod luck with it!
XOXO

Thanks so much, Carrie! So awesome that you guys are getting local foods and cultivating relationships with your neighborhood farms! Hooray!

I know you guys have to be a little careful with breads, but more and more breads don't have HFCS. Just takes a lot of time to read all of the labels.

I usually get one of the Arnold breads. I love the Healthy Multi-Grain or the Ancient Grains. Bimbo Breads are from the same parent company Bimbo Bakeries. So I will either get their whole grain white or the Nature's Own brand when we want a white bread.

Haven't had as much luck with hamburger/hotdog rolls.

Hope you feel better.

Thanks, Deborah - same to you! There are Nature's Own hamburger and hot dog rolls out there now, so we usually get those. We don't buy white bread - Michael and I both prefer wheat.

I think that's part of why I like to make my own bread - I know what goes in it! Sure, it takes more time, but that's okay. I really enjoy it and think it tastes better than anything you can buy on the shelf.

I agree for sure about the taste! When we were trying to save money I made a lot of bread before we realized it cost about the same. Homemade bread is awesome! When I have more time we'll go back to homemade only, at least that's one of my hopes.
