Counting today, we are leaving for Denver, CO in four days.
We will be driving for three days in a van with my entire family + my in-laws all the way to Denver.
I'm freaking out on several levels in negative and positive ways and probably a whole bunch of neutral ways as well, if there is such a thing, but I do want to say that I am really excited about this trip.
I have been to Ireland, Israel, Jamaica, Canada - but I have never been west EVER and I cannot wait to just see everything - even the boring parts.
I'm secretly hoping that in Kansas we can forget Topeka (our planned stop) and just sleep out under the stars, far away from the city - I'd like to see a bunch of stars and get a glance at the Milky Way.
We have two stops planned for overnights - Columbus, OH, where we'll be staying with family, I presume, and Topeka, KS, where we'll be staying in a hotel. Possibly all of us in the same hotel room (EGADS!). We'll see how that goes.
I know that Doug and Lyndsey have tons planned for us, but I've only heard cryptic tale - so we'll see what we're really in for. We're bringing the bikes along and we're planning for some hiking adventures and some other things. I know my parents are worried that we'll love it there so much we'll never come back. All we can really do is wait and see what happens.

There is nothing wrong with living far from the parents. Besides, as my parents say, it's a great place to vacation and having family here makes it all the better!! Sleep as much as you can on the trip because I doubt there will be much sleep here. P.S. The drive from Kansas City to Denver is BORING!!!
Driving (or rather riding) across the country in a crowded car is such an ingrained part of my childhood!
Despite how flat and boring the view might seem in some areas, there's something sublime about a whole flat world of corn stalks under the blazing sun.
Also, make sure you drive into Denver in the day time; the sight of the mountains growing on the horizon is one you'll not forget.
I have to agree with Pete about the sublime-ness of the view. Particularly at this time of year with crops growing. You get some incredible vistas of waving seas of soy and corn and once you get west of Indiana somewhere there is wheat, too.
Enjoy yourself on the trip. I've never been west of the Mississippi either. Now I'm like triply exited for you!

And Lynds, I figure I can get by with little sleep for a few days :-) I'll probably be running on adrenaline :-)
